Here is more of our trip. There was a little park with a log cabin. The kids didn't want to move to this house either even though there was a really cool stream in the backyard and plenty of BBQ pits and picnic tables.
Big Rock Candy Mountain. I forgot to get any good shots of the entire mountain. I'm terrible that way. I don't plan my pictures very well while we are out and always wish I would have taken a few that I missed. Me and Owen stayed at the bottom of the mountain while Kevin took Emily and Tyler up to the top of the smallest peak. They didn't care so much about the mountain, but really enjoyed the "rock candy" that we got them.
We talked to a few locals around Big Rock Candy Mountain because we had read about a ghost town called Kimberly, but were unable to find any directions to it online. We were told the way to go to follow a road that would take us past a lot of old mining things and even had an outside mining museum at the top. There was a lot of cool stuff to see.
I love seeing old stuff like this. It's amazing that any of it is still left around after so long. And it makes me grateful for my nice house with a heater and air conditioner and carpet.
There wasn't really any information posted around this other than to stay on the road because the land was private property. I'm sure it had something to do with mining the gold out of the mountain.
The only cabin at the "miner's camp" that was still left standing. The rest were all completely collapsed. It had been used somewhat recently, for what I don't know, but there was linoleum over top the original wood flooring and an old couch inside.
Shoe that was on the window sill of the above house. Pretty amazing that it is still around.
Off in the trees was an outhouse. This mine was used as late as the 20s. When was concrete invented? because the floor and the "toilet" are both concrete.
Bucket to bring the gold up to the surface.
Entrance to the mine. I certainly wouldn't have wanted to go in there back then. Even scarier than mining is now days.
This was actually at the beginning of the trail. We had a great time at the "Canyon of Gold Tour."
At the end of the tour Kevin wanted to see if we could keep going even though there was starting to be a decent amount of snow on the trail.
We really didn't get very far before this is what we found. Kevin tried to go slow and mash down the snow, but it was at least 3 feet high right in the middle and we got stuck.
The picture doesn't look as good, but we were really stuck. Snow just all up under there. Kevin didn't mind though. He used the winch and pulled us out. The only reason he tried in the first place was because he knew if we did get stuck the winch would pull us out.
This was another fun part of our trip. I still have more pictures to post and I'll do that yet again tomorrow so that I don't bore you to death all at once. :)
